1.
Recorded on the easterly beach of Loch an Eisg Brachaidh. A dull day with rain coming and going. The distant seal call seemed to be a grieving female whose white motionless calf lay between her and the rocks running into the sea. Other seals can be heard calling and splashing in the loch while Curlew can also be identified. MKH8040 (ORTF) and MixPre 3 ii was used to capture this doleful ambience.
2.
Culkein Drumbeg is a remote village on the north west coast of Scotland (about 2 km north west of Drumbeg). This recording was made with a Sony PCM D-100 placed inside an old fisherman's hut while the wind swirled around outside.
3.
Baddidarach is located just north of Lochinver. These recordings where made on a warm quiet afternoon while sitting near the head of Loch Inver. The sensuous sound of seaweed is in the foreground but possibly (?) Divers can be heard too, certainly Oyster Catchers and other assorted biophony. Recorded with two MKH8040 microphones (ORTF).
4.
Recorded along the Peat Path running south of the village Drumbeg. A JrF hydrophone was placed down a natural, deep fissure that had opened up the path near the Loch Torr na h Eigin. (Sound Devices MixPre 3 II)
5.
Baddidarach is located just north of Lochinver. These recordings where made on a warm quiet afternoon while sitting near the head of Loch Inver. A fishing boat makes its way into the harbour and the wash breaks against the rocks rear where I was recording. MKH8040 microphones (ORTF) and MixPre 3 II.
6.
Croft pigs 01:51
While walking past a croft along the Baddidarach to Achmelvich path, a mother pig feeds its offspring in the rain. Sony PCM D-100.
7.
While at the quayside in Lochinver, the Brittany trawler Julien Coleou approached the port and began the noisy process of docking. Sony PCM D-100.
8.
Crossing over the narrow mouth of Loch Roe, a rickety and narrow road bridge sings lovely harmonics as the prevailing westerly wind passes across it. MKH8040 (ORTF) and MixPre 3 II.
9.
This track is made from an extract of a recording I made by placing the microphones inside a digger scoop during a summer rain storm. Two mikroUši Pro in AB and MixPre 3 II.
10.
Culag Wood 01:09
Culag Wood lies south of Lochinver Port and rises up into a complex of natural woodland that also runs down to the rocky southerly shore of Loch Inver. The sound of the sea and wind mingles with Goldfinch calls, Ravens and other birds. Sony PCM D-100

about

During the middle of July 2022 I took a family holiday to the sparsely populated area of Assynt in the far north west of Scotland. These recordings were collected with no particular purpose other than to capture events and ambiences that I enjoyed while on that holiday.
Its unique atmosphere is both an outcome of the splendid geology of coast and mountain but it is also a product of the need, for those who live there, to maintain a life and those who visit, to contribute to its economic viability. While it is a place subjected to many cycles of repetition and change, it continues somehow, to remain identifiably itself. It is certainly is a place I need to keep going back to, in order to get closer to all those sounds, sights and smells.
